The INPhINIT awardees are developing their research at IDAEA in the field of hydrology, environmental science and applied chemistry
The ”la Caixa” Foundation has awarded 105 new doctoral and postdoctoral scholarships to excellent researchers to carry out their projects at universities and research centers in Spain and Portugal. With the INPhINIT doctoral scholarships and the Junior Leader postdoctoral scholarships, the ”la Caixa” Foundation pursues the double objective of retaining and attracting talent to promote excellent research in these countries.
The researchers Luciana Scrinzi, Lyen Castro, and Daniel Gutiérrez Martín, are some of the INPhINIT awardees who are developing their research at IDAEA in the field of hydrology, environmental science and applied chemistry, respectively.
“My PhD focuses on the design of Managed Aquifer Recharge schemes to capture surface water during extreme rainfall events resulting from climate change, increasing water availability“, explains Scrinzi.
Scrinzi’s PhD also addresses how Managed Aquifer Recharge could help mitigate droughts, floods, and water pollution processes at the catchment scale, fostering climate adaptation in collaboration with stakeholders. This research entails water and climatic data analysis, surface water and groundwater flow modelling, solute and reactive transport modelling in porous media, and environmental chemistry analysis.
“I aim to develop an effect-directed analysis approach for the prioritization of chemicals of emerging concern in urban groundwater“, reveals Castro.
Castro’s thesis studies the natural attenuation processes in aquifers that may affect the pollutants’ fate. The idea is to bring forward a novel method combining environmental chemometrics and zebrafish transcriptomics to monitor the chemical status of water bodies affected by pollution.
“My goal is to develop new analytical methods to determine emerging organic pollutants in the environment and their human exposure“, describes Gutiérrez-Martín.
Gutiérrez-Martín PhD addresses the question of the effects of chemical exposure on human health using state-of-the-art high-resolution mass-spectrometry and non-target approaches.

Both INPhINIT and Junior Leader scholarships offer competitive salaries and cross-training. In the case of doctoral programs, issues such as scientific communication, the emotional well-being of the researcher, leadership, and funding opportunities are reinforced. In postdoctoral scholarships, an independent scientific career is promoted as an option for a professional future, and innovation and leadership are encouraged.
“At the ”la Caixa” Foundation we work daily with the objective of building a better society for everyone and, to achieve this, we need to remain very attentive to the new needs and new challenges that the present and the future pose to us”, explained the deputy general director of the ”la Caixa” Foundation, Elisa Durán, during the scholarship award ceremony at the CosmoCaixa Science Museum.
The ”la Caixa” Foundation Scholarship Program is the most important of those promoted by private entities in Spain and Europe, both due to the number of scholarships awarded and the variety of disciplines. In total, the entity will allocate nearly 21 million euros to this promotion of doctoral and postdoctoral fellows. Both programs have been co-financed by the European Commission through the Marie Skłodowska-Curie COFUND Actions, in the context of the Horizon 2020 framework programme.
Of the 105 scholarship recipients selected in this edition, 49 are Spanish and 56 are foreigners, from 21 countries. Of these, Italy is the country with the highest number of scholarship recipients, 16. It is followed by Portugal, with 9; Germany, with 6, and the United States, with 4.
The scholarships awarded have been distributed among more than 60 research centers and universities in Spain and Portugal. Regarding specialties, theoretical physics and mathematics top the list, with 9 scholarship recipients; They are followed by environmental sciences, materials science and technology, and biomedical engineering and technology, with 7 scholarship holders each.
