On October 4th, the predoctoral researchers Juliette Bedrossiantz and Liliya Sokalchuck, both from the Environmental Toxicology group, inaugurated the project Ciencia en el barrio (Science in the Neighbourhood) in Barcelona by giving a workshop for two 4th ESO classes of the Miquel Tarradell Highschool. During the session, the students were explained what the daphnia and zebrafish are and why they are used as model organisms in biomedicine and toxicology. The researchers brought some individuals of these organisms for the students to observe through the binocular loupe. Finally, they carried out an experiment to assess the effect of alcohol and caffeine on the heart rate of these organisms.

Ciencia en el barrio is an outreach project that started in Madrid in 2016, organised by CSIC, and with the support of the Spanish Ministry of Science and Technology. The objective is to bring science closer to neighbourhoods that do not have a cultural scientific offer, mainly aimed at high school students, with workshops, conferences, reading clubs, and guided visits to CSIC centers. This year, the project has expanded to Barcelona, covering the districts of Ciutat Vella, Sant Martí, Nou Barris, and Sants-Montjuïc.
