The IDAEA Sustainability Committee launched the campaign to raise awareness about the ecological footprint of daily consumption of coffee capsules at IDAEA, IQAC, and CID.
During the European Week for Waste Reduction, the IDAEA Sustainability Committee initiated the Coffee Conscious Campaign to spotlight the environmental impact of daily consumption of coffee capsules at IDAEA, IQAC, and CID.
The campaign unfolded in two stages: first, a collection of all coffee capsules used in our offices to shed light on the considerable volume of non-sustainable waste generated. Out of 638 capsules collected, only 32 (5%) were compostable, leaving 606 non-compostable capsules. This resulted in an estimated weight of 642.36 grams of capsule waste produced in our center, underscoring the need for improvements in our sustainability efforts. The second part involved a survey to learn more about the staff members’ coffee habits and preferences. The survey prompted interesting results. Notably, 24% of the 160 respondents revealed not drinking coffee daily, indicating that 3/4 of IDAEA, IQAC, and CID staff are daily coffee consumers.
In terms of coffee preferences, approximately 50% favor capsules, while the rest opt for various formats, such as instant coffee, vending machines, or the classic Italian coffee maker. Participants also gave insightful suggestions to enhance our workplace sustainability. For example, promoting joint orders for sustainable coffee capsules, installing automatic coffee makers in different locations, and encouraging the use of personal cups for vending machines.
