PER and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS) exposure: Impact Of Dermal contact with menstrual products
101198272
Menstrual products are essential for hygiene and gender equality. However, recent research has shown that these products may contain harmful chemicals, particularly per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). The health risks associated with PFAS exposure through dermal contact with menstrual products remain poorly understood. Supported by the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions programme, the PERIOD project will investigate how skin contact with menstrual products contributes to PFAS exposure and assess the related health risks. Aligned with the EU Chemicals Strategy for Sustainability, the project will use advanced analytical methods to test a range of menstrual products for both legacy and emerging PFAS, measure their potential to migrate to the skin, and perform detailed risk assessments.

Multiomics Profiling of Plants in Polluted Environments
101210853
Rice is a staple food for more than half of the world’s population, making it crucial to understand how pesticides affect it. Traditional single-omics methods offer only limited insights, whereas multi-omics approaches can uncover the complex interactions and mechanisms at play in rice. Supported by the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions programme, the MPOPPE project will investigate the molecular effects of commonly used pesticides on rice by combining transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics. The project will examine changes in gene expression, identify key proteins, and track metabolic shifts in rice exposed to pesticides, with a focus on stress responses and detoxification pathways. Its findings will provide vital information to develop integrated pest management strategies that improve rice yields and support sustainable farming practices.

Effective Monitoring and Modelling solutions for data-driven hOlistic management of URBAN water quality
101180710
URBANM2O addresses the challenge of improving urban water quality in line with the EU’s Zero Pollution ambitions, in a context of increasing environmental pressures. Cities are facing growing threats from chemical contaminants and microplastics, multiple pollution sources, climate change, and ageing infrastructure, while current monitoring systems are often too costly, slow, and fragmented to provide the level of detail needed for effective management.
In response, URBANM2O aims to equip urban water managers with the comprehensive, integrated data required to develop and implement data-driven water quality strategies, tackling both current and future risks and supporting the transition towards climate-resilient cities with safe and healthy water bodies.

Mixing and Dispersion in Two-phase porous media Flow
101202639
Understanding how substances mix underground is crucial for safely storing hydrogen and CO2, cleaning polluted soils, and recovering oil. Yet, in two-phase flows (like oil and water moving through porous rock), the physics of mixing and dispersion remain poorly understood. Supported by the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions programme, the MDFT project combines advanced simulations, fluid dynamics, and geological modelling to investigate how different fluids interact, mix, and spread in complex underground environments. The project will shed new light on reactive and non-reactive systems alike, paving the way for smarter, safer subsurface engineering. Driven by an interdisciplinary team, MDFT also strengthens research careers and international collaboration.

VOLCANIC DISASTER RISK MANAGEMENT FOR THE CANARY ISLANDS (SPAIN)
101193100
The Canary Islands is one of the most active volcanic regions in the World. This has been well evidenced by the past eruptions of El Hierro in 2011-2012 and La Palma in 2021, which remind us that volcanism is a major threat for the economic and social stability of this peripheral Spanish region and that development of strategic disaster risk management actions is mandatory to reduce risk in the whole area.
The aim of this project is to provide technical assistance to the corresponding disaster risk management authorities to undertake the revision of the Special Plan for Civil Protection and Volcanic Risk Emergency in the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands (PEVOLCA). To accomplish such a complex goal, the applicant (CSIC), in collaboration with the Canarian Government and its main disaster risk management bodies (Civil Protection, First Responders, local governments and municipalities) will provide the basis to undertake a full revision of the existing PEVOLCA, initially approved in 2010 and revised in 2018, adapting it to the real needs of the area, after the experience gained during the management of the La Palma eruption. This will contribute to improve the preparation, reaction and resilience of Canarian society and authorities in front of future eruptions. Taking advantage of previous EC ECHO funded projects (VeTOOLS and EVE) coordinated by the CSIC and aimed at developing a systematic methodology and e-tools to conduct long and short term volcanic hazard assessment and a volcano early warning system, the CSIC will contribute to develop a new volcanic disaster risk management plan for the Canary Islands, from a multi-risk perspective, including an prevention and preparedness based on precise long-term volcanic hazards assessment and volcano monitorig, and developing new risk reduction policies, public awareness raising and training programs for disaster risk management.
